COWBOYS GEORGE SELVIE AND TEAMMATES DELIVERED 1,000 BRAND-NEW BOOKS TO STUDENTS AT WESTERN HILLS ELEMENTARY

FORT WORTH, TX – On Tuesday, December 17, 2013, George Selvie and a few of his teammates delivered 1,000 brand new reading books to the students at Western Hills Elementary School.  The distribution of books was a collaborative efforts between Selvie, Athletes for Charity (www.athletesforcharity.com) and First Book (www.firstbook.org), the nonprofit that helped coordinate the event and secure the books from publishers.

“I enjoy motivating and inspiring kids to strive to achieve academic success,” states Selvie. “Since reading is a fundamental skill necessary for any success in life, donating books made sense.”

Selvie was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams in 2010 and has spent time with the St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars. On July 24, 2013, Selvie signed with the Dallas Cowboys.  In college, Selvie was a standout at the University of South Florida where he became the first two-time All-American in USF history when he was selected by the American Football Coaches Association.

Titles delivered to the students at Western Hills include Disney’s "The Wonderful World of Space" and "Wonderful World of Earth"; various ZigZag titles; and other STEM related books for the higher level grades. In addition to the books, Selvie and teammates such as Corvey Irvin, have donated prizes to host an essay contest with the students to ensure the books are read by introducing an added incentive of a prize. Contest prizes will include Cowboys logo autographed footballs, t-shirts, caps and draw string bags.  Prize items have also been provided by the Dallas Cowboys and NFL Players Association.

“Something I hold dear to my heart is to give every child at Western Hills Elementary the best opportunity to succeed in whatever they choose to do. Reading is the gateway to this success,” states Elizabeth Yoder, Principal at Western Hills Elementary.

“Something else that we want students to understand is that they have an obligation to “pay forward” the goodness they have received to others who are in need. This event is an example for them to see both in action. These Dallas Cowboys are helping to instill the love of reading by giving the books to our children. They are also “paying forward” the success that has they have achieved to our children with their time, enthusiasm and donations for the books.”
